Hello beautiful humans!
Welcome to the first blog post I’ve made in years, and the first ever blog post to the newly-launched https://reallifeisanrpg.com, the website (and various channels alongside it) for my upcoming book “Real Life is a Role-Playing Game.”
This book has been in the works for over a decade now.
Realistically, my whole life has been leading to the creation of this book, but even just the actual writing itself started back in 2016. I began posting small segments of what became the book to my blog, fleshing out the ideas, and getting my earliest feedback from other people. In 2019 when I printed five zines of my writings, one of them was the earliest version of “Real Life is a Role-Playing Game.” Since then, I’ve just kept writing on it, kept living my life and taking in geeky content, having more little epiphanies and “Aha!” moments
As you may have noticed, over the last couple of weeks I set up accounts on all the social media platforms, created a website, and started posting some short videos. I figured that since July & August are my beta reader period, then the best things to focus on this summer are building online presence, planning for next year, and locking in the rest of my launch details.
After spending a LOT of time over the last month diving into the various self-publishing & small author focused sub-Reddits, I’ve learned a lot about the space, about the immense time & energy that goes into getting a book out in front of people, and then getting those people to read it.
It’s been about five years since I “retired” from my life as a full-time blogger, and I’m feeling inspiration flow as I dive back into the web and set things up. The FreeRossNow project brought me back into the social media sphere for about 10 months of non-stop grinding, it was never as writing focused – that project was largely about speaking in X Spaces, organizing our community to “raid” posts online, and speaking at events. I’ll be doing some speaking in 2027, and I’m sure I’ll be hopping onto some Spaces, along with the many podcasts & radio shows I’m lining up for my year-long book tour.
Oh yeah, did I mention that I’m lining up a full year book tour? I guess it doesn’t mean quite as much when you already live out of a backpack like I have since 2015, but for the year of 2027, I’m greatly increasing the number of events I’m hitting. Most of my 2027 list are fan-cons that I’m getting Artist Alley / Creator Corner tables at, with the rest being the usual conscious festivals & solutions-oriented conferences I go to annually.
Anyway, that’s a couple steps out. First up is finishing everything for the book itself, including the cover, interior art, final draft, and formatting – then on to the publishing itself, getting the book out there on all the platforms, in all the catalogs, all in physical, e-book, AND audio-book formats.
If you want to stay updated with everything I’m doing, get exclusive content, and support the book, hop over and sign up for my email list.
@RealLifeIsAnRPG is locked in on all the social media platforms as well.
My goal is to get this thing into the hands of a million readers.
I think this book can change lives, I think it can help geeks (of which there are now something like a billion on the planet) - ESPECIALLY with the second edition (ETA: 2028) hopefully including feedback, and even content, from hundreds or thousands of people.
Hopefully you’ll be one of them :-)
Either way, thanks for tuning in!
